Departing for a 2500+ mile European roadtrip next wednesday, and trying to decide whether to make any attempt to sort the clutch on the H1 engine that's currently in the bike, or just live with it.
Basically it's fine most of the time, but judders like anything if you are trying to manoeuvre/in traffic/generally riding really slowly. There's also a fairly fine band of adjustment between slipping and dragging. Leads me to suspect the plates are warped and/or the hub/basket fingers might be a bit knackered.
I have the L3 engine sitting in the back of the garage waiting for the top end to be sorted out. I know the clutch is fine in this engine, so I have a few questions.
1) Are the complete clutch assemblies interchangeable? I know the L's are supposed to have the K-BATL clutch in and the H's don't, but can I just swap the entire clutch pack (hub, basket, plates, etc). ISTR zimm saying he had an H motor with an L clutch in.
2) Failing that, are the plates (friction plates and steels) the same in both motors?
3) Does anyone really change the clutch nut every time they take the clutch out?
Any help much appreciated.
A few quick clutch related questions.

1) At a guess I'd say yes you can do this............make sure the primary drive gearing is the same otherwise it should fit OK
2) Once again almost certainly yes
3) no..............and never had a problem

I'd say to change the clutch nut about as often as your front sprocket nut!
But don't forget to use a brand new split pin every single time you loosen the axle nut!

Re: A few quick clutch related questions.
The big nuts on many modern bike wheel spindles have a spring thing built into them that does a simiilar job to the spilt pins or R clips.
If you want you can drill a little hole in the nut and use some lock wire to secure it al la racer style.

Re: A few quick clutch related questions.
yeah id do that but when it comes to sale time people are going to think that it was a track bike.
I know poeple that have lost the axil nut (admitadly its proably there fault) but the point is that it couldnt have happened with a pin there

Re: A few quick clutch related questions.
I had an H with a kbatl equipped engine .. probably wasn't original engine though.deviant wrote: 1) Are the complete clutch assemblies interchangeable? steels and friction plates are the same part number but one model has one more friction plate than the other.. i cant remember if its H or L though.deviant wrote: 2) Failing that, are the plates (friction plates and steels) the same in both motors?

If i was in your situation, i'd strip out both clutches, clean up the H basket and fit the steel plates out of the L3 with the best friction plates you've got kicking around between the two. The Kbatl doesnt do much apart from rattle more unless its carefully setup (modified) and its my guess its only your steels that are fooked.
