I had found a few tinternet articles on a ZXR4 with an EX-UP 1000cc motor in it but lost them

I remember them saying that the motors are pretty straight forward to mount into the frames and the mid section of the pipe needs re-shaped to keep the power valve working.

This gives a potential 140BHP ZXR which would be nice

Anybody got links for them? I also seen some where a ZZR6 motor being used too but required jig work.

Having looked at a Z1000 (new model) I reckon it's a potential donor too, keeping the FI would be nice but you do get FCR's here done by Bito R&D which slip on but don't know if the clearance at the back to keep the motor level .....

Having just got rid of my 89 Exup earlier last year I wouldn't think the ZXR's frame would be strong enough to take the Exups engine.
The Exup as far as I can remember was around 235KG and most of that is engine.
Bloody quick bikes for their time and my old one was still good for over 160

i read somewhere, i think it was on this site about a bloke that put a 900 blade engine in his 400, it sounded like it wasnt too much of a big job, well if you have the time, toools etc, i think he built it in his house lol, eventualy the frame cracked but it got braced up and he is still using it fine

Been a while since I worked on an FZR but from what I remember the engines are way compact and has magnesium casings too making them very light. The Blade motors are also compact but think the mounting points would cause problems.

Having recently lugged a ZXR4 motor about the flat the exup is skinnier. Got a spare frame and a donor MotoGP style swinger to have a crack with

the blade story is on this site. tbh i can see a 1000cc engine being to lardy for the 400, plus the size and gyro effects you'd expect to completly screw the handeling.

Somthing like a very modern 600 engine would make nearly the same bhp (not the torque of course) and id expect work with the bike better.

Its only the rocker and sprocket casing thats magnesium and the engine aint light.

ZXR400 frames are made from various assortments of cheese. I wouldn't want to ride it thats for sure.

Just weighed the ZXR4 engine at 50Kg dry (some oil/coolant remaining)

I know a RG400 is 62Kg - shipped 18 of those

Going to weigh the RZV500 motor I've got in the cupboard but will put it at 54Kg just now as it was far easier moving it about than the RG lumps. It's also a lot more compact than the RG motors and almost looks the same size as the RS250 motor I've got.

I've also got a KR250 engine and that's 40Kg (2cyl) , HRC RS125 motor comes in at 19.2Kgs

I did have a big bore ZRX1100 engine and I'm sure i wrote down the weight of that somewhere but 72-75Kgs rings a bell (same weight as me) - they are huge lumps compared to an exup motor - at a guess I would put it in the mid 60's
