hi castrol/jeppo ..
the base gasket seals the cylinder block to the crankcase, you just use silicon to seal the joint instead of the gasket.
its a personal thing as to wether you fit the gasket or not, some tuners leave it in, some DIY'ers leave it out as a cheap (free) performance mod .. although how much difference it makes is probably a small percentage of cock all
