£30 iirc, can also be given something like a notice of correction were you have to take the bike with a suitable pipe on it to a reconized MOT center to sighn it off.

I thought it was £60 fine?

can get issued with notice of correction where you'll have to go to an MOT centre, you can also be fined for making _too_ much noise.
Not to mention, a really loud can is a cop magnet.....

If the cop was a complete knob, could he not give points aswell as a fine. Also in a crash I thought it would also be an excuse for the insurance not to pay out.

The insurance co. would have to prove that the modified exhaust was a causing factor in the accident. Other than incorrect fitting or parts failure of the end can leading to damage to you or a third party, there's virtually no chance of that ever standing up in court. BUT, if you're on a restricted license and it takes you over the allowed power output, then they could pull your pants down...

Anyone from last year's rideout will testify to how loud my last 9r's exhaust was, and despite the engineer taking a few pics of the can after the accident, nothing was said and there was no mention on any report*. Same as my VFR when that got trashed.

I think ASBO's have been given, though (not to me).

*EDIT - I'm pretty sure it had 'NOT FOR ROAD USE' all over it, too! :smt003

it might be one of them £30 jobbys but it goes to £60 if not stumped up within so many weeks. i rode round with a not for road use scorpion on my zxr and didnt get done for it, and the Akrapovic race can on my CBR is way loud when i thrash it but all you need to do is be aware not to rev it up if there are police near lol..

i actually think a louder can helps you out because car drivers hear you coming thus they actually look for you more which cant be a bad thing lol.

There's no test for an exhaust in the MOT unless it is a model with a catalyst in it.

It's testers discretion as to it's too loud or not, are they not fining you for DTP rather than a non road legal pipe?

They don't give a hoot here - well they are meant too with bikes after a certain year but nobody seems to give a fig, had the fed's admiring my MotoGP can a few month's ago. It should have a stamp on it for the age of my bike and doesn't and they didn't bat an eyelid about it. :smt003

The louder the can the better - its a safety thing - it helps the dimwitted pedestrians around town know that you are there and that it might not be a good time to stroll into the road without looking - just ut a carbon micron on my VFR and there is no way pedestrians are an issue anymore :smt003

Exactly the point! Loud pipes do save lives!

My KLR's exhaust is really loud and u can see pedestrians like 50 yards ahead looking back to see what all the noise is about, when im filtering i do rev her quite abit just to make drivers hear me and think what the F**K is that?

Plus when i get it to anything over 50 she sounds like a small plane :D

The place i take my bikes to be MOT'd at dont care about how loud it is :D he actually loves it when he gets a loud bike in :D
If it's broke spray it with WD40, if it's still broke spray it again and leave it over night, if it's still broke, bin it.

Instead of pissing about trying to find the horn, I'll often just pull the clutch in and rev the engine to get the attention of car drivers doing something stupid. In my opinion, if you've got time to find and use your horn in an emergency, then you should be avoiding the bloody threat instead!

loud pipes are a cop magnet! shouldnt rely on them to alert pedestrians / dozy car drivers either. Ride defensively like no one has seen you.

It isnt a question of relying on them - its a question of "every little helps" - in much the same way as we all use our headlights to improve the chances that drivers have seen us so loud pipes help to ensure that they might also hear us. Loud pipes dont excuse lack of attention but around town pedestrians are a genuine hazard particularly at this time of year when emergency braking shocking isnt recommended!!
