A litlle noisy...

Post by Jackson »

Hi guys!

Got a 95 ZXR400 L. Unfortunately Its developed a ticking noise! from what i can see/hear, its coming from the right hand side of the engine. Ticking speed increases with revs so im thinking maybe its a dodgy cam chain tensioner/cam chain?

Ive not had a proper look yet but ive had the top off and the cams look fine (no damage or pitting).

Any other ideas from you guys?

Cheers

whats milage and last time it was serviced? all zxr's are noisy bikes and most develop weirder noises when the weather gets colder aswell, generally cam chain will last a good few thousand miles past it's service interval if the bike is treated well so it shouldnt be a big worry unless you dont know when it was last done.

both my zxr's have a ticking noise that rises and falls with the revs but it's just incredibly noisy carbs and that sounds louder on the right side than the left aswell, both carbs and cam chains/tensioners are in perfect working order too.

my 750 also has another ticking noise that you can hear when moving that rises and falls which is loose brake pads at the front cuz i need to change the brake fluid.

and all that being said when the cam chain on the 400 was going it sounded like more of hiss than a ticking noise.

The trouble with having an open mind, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

cheers for the info Xphyral. Tbh, im not too sure when it had its last proper service done! Im not too familiar with these engines either which isnt too useful!

When ive got chance to investigate (will be this weekend) ill be stripping it down to have a look. Any methods of testing/identifying if the cam chain/tensioner is on the way out?

Didnt think of the noise coming from the carbs, will have to dig out the stethoscope to try and pin point the noises! Just want to make sure im not going to make things worse riding with strange noises!

Cheers guys

generally the cam chain ia the cause of the noise from these bikes, if you grab a screw driver with a fat end, and put the screwing end onto you're L/H engine top end, (when facing front of bike) and put your ear to the butt of the screw driver, you'll hear if the sounds coming from where its placed, if it is, its porbbaly a shagged cam chain or tensioner, if the bikes done about 24,000 miles its probably due doing tensioners £90 from fowlers and easy to install your self, the cam chain on the other hand is a little differnt, genuine kawasaki ones are endless and vus so require the top end off to fit it, you can be buy rivetable ones that wouldnt require the top end off but they wont last as long (but concidering how long u'll probably own it, im sure it would last a good few more years) if need advice at fitting a tensioner (id do this first) add me to msn (superflyafterworld@hotmail.com) or PM me and ill tell you have to fit it
