£700 service, bit pricey?

£700 service, bit pricey?
Something along the lines of:
oil and air filter changed
new sparkplugs
new back & front tires
chain sprocket
Then something I'm a bit sceptical about - they reckon the front and back brakes both have something up, and I know the previous owner got them all replaced in August last year. Said the front had some kind of oil contamination and the right pad would need changing.
What ya reckon? Sounds like a fair bit beyond a normal service and I know tires are expensive, but £700?

That's mental, why don't you give the jobs a go yourself?
Least you'll get the satisfaction...£28 for plugs £72 chain n sprockets oil filter £5.75 and oil...£15? Pads £30 for all four.
Tyres, no idea as I've never bought for the ZXR before, I'd guess £170?
You could do it for £320 ish and have a great feeling of achievement.

Yeah do it yourself mate. your looking at 200 quid max for tyres including balancing fitting disposal etc...
as lynners say those prices are about right. 700 quid is daylight robbery to be honest, unless they are really taking thier time (cos they charge for labour remember) it cant possibly cost that much.
What exactly is up with the brakes according to these guys? If they stop you good then i doubt theres a problem with them. Get a second opinion perhaps? Thats far too expensive for all of that.

Ok I think I might give some of it a go myself, one of my housemates knows his bikes and I've changed spark plugs before at least.
They said the problem with the brakes was an oil seal at the front wheel (suspension...? can't remember) had come off, and oil has contaminated one of the brake pads.

get some degreaser on them then burn the residue off using your brakes with caution.

If the seal has gone, get the fork leg out and take it in seperately, all the time they are spending taking your bike apart to do something they are charging you for it. So less you give them to do the less you pay and sooner you get it back too!
If the pad has had any oil on it then definately change it, not worth taking the risk, only thing is tho you need to change all the pads on the front so there is even wear and will all need changing at the same time.

bloody hell!! 700 quid thats a joke,i agree that you should try it yourself,i know nothing about motorbikes and i've just recently cleaned my air filter and took my carbs off for a good clean as well,all the people on this site are bloody decent chaps and you'll get all the advice you need.go for it mate.

brake pads are dead easy but obv not worth doing if your fork seal is still leaking.
the seal itself isn't that bad if you've got a reasonable toolkit and a couple of pairs of hands. you'll need either a headstock paddock stand or some way of winching the bike up by the frame. total cost is then about £10 for seals and then some fork oil on top. I dread to think what a garage (especially pidcocks) would charge.

tyres you'll need to get done, but will be cheaper if you have stands for both ends so you can take loose wheels in.

id do it all meself mate. ive done everything ( bar re-bores etc ) to my bike. If its a job that needs specialist tools either adapt something, buy the right tools or grit your teeth and pay up. as for the jobs u listed you should be able to do those yourself. fork seals maybe a lil tough if you are not that deep into the mechanics of the bike. check out the manuals on this site. loads of help in them. i downloaded all i could and made a manual up. loads and loads of pages but if you have a pc and printer at work, fill yer boots

£110 of that was a gold tsubaki x-link chain(which looks gorgeous btw) and renthal sprockets.
if i add a new set of tyres to that: metzeler sportec m1's £178 fitted we get:
£475 for pretty much everything except having valve clearences done
So have a bitch at em and ask to see an itemised recipt for all the work done.
