Elictrical problem

ello people...hopefully somone out there can shed some light on this problem as its doin my head in tryin to sus it!
basically...my full beam doesnt work as it should, heres what happens.
switch the lights onto half beam and they work fine, flick to high beam and it switches down to parking light, flick back to low beam and it works fine...flashes do nothin altho the relay does click which to me shows power is going to it. When the bike was mot'd at a local garage the bloke got the full beam working by inside the fuse box bridging the low beam fuse to the high beam and told me i would need a new fuse box...which i have...well, a second hand one but i still have the original problem...

sounds like the wire from relay to the head light is broken somewhere ?!

but if that is the case...why does it work when the two fuses are bridged?

could be a corroded earth strap, i had these lighting problems cleaned the earth strap from the battery and all was fine.

does the relay click when you shift to high beam from dip? Or just when you use the flasher?

Get the mulitimeter out and have a poke about, seems very odd.

when you say the earth strap off the battery do you mean the neg' battery terminal or something else? had the multometer out and couldnt find anythin but im no expert...

errrm there is a click when i shift to high beam but doesnt seem as loud as when i use the flasher...

yes mate the negative strap from the battery, could be any earth lead tbh so have a look around for any corroded connections.

Hi,

Buy yaself some vasaline or WD40 and pack all the connection blocks behind the headlight with it. Give the wires a wiggle while you flick the main beam on and off to pin point the bad wire if there is 1. I had this problem once on 1 of my old bikes, the metal pin that crimps the wire that then clips into the connection block had worked it's way loose and fell out giving me no lights.

Failing that, take the tank off and you'll see an earth connected to the frame just above the fuel pump, make sure that's connected good and tight.

Or... put a bigger fuse in the main beam slot? It is 15amp right? Or is it 30? Maybe change ya bulbs?

never put in a larger than required fuse, thats just asking for a fire! Fuses are there to protect the equipment it suplies, and if its too large any excessive current will either burn the wiring out, start a fire or if your lucky just bugger up whatever its supplying!
