Foil on your exhaust

This sounds really eccentric but im on a budget of £0. got a hole in the 7R's exhaust and patched it up with some putty about a week ago. But yesterday it started blowing again, 'fuckit that holes getting bigger'. Popped a wheelie and after that is was as loud as it was before i plugged it. Had a look just now and the putty i put in before has actually come off! so re-done it and its not blowing anymore!

What im wondering is that it may have come loose because of all the rain we have had recently and made it all gooey again and released it? What i wanna do it wrap it in foil and wire round it to stop it getting wet again possibly weakening it. My concern though, it that it may catch fire. Ive also got a suspicion that it may have cracked because i havent warmed the bike up slowly enough, with the exhaust expanding quicker than the putty?

Im hoping to resolve it completely by the purchase of a stainless steel system in about a months time when ive finally got paid from both jobs.

So what you think, will it catch fire?

Couldn't you just tig weld on an aluminum patch?
Small tig rig is < £100 these days ..

Or take the patch to a machine shop, probably only charge you £20 to stick it on.

I personally would look into the various chemical metal options ..

Or tbh just buy a new zaust. I couldn't be fecked with it!

I assume you're not using normal bog-standard stuff that you wrap your sandwiches in? Actually even that should be ok...

But why are you buggering about with foil anyway?

Get yourself to Halfords and buy some exhaust bandage! I had a huuuuuuuge hole (well, holes come to think of it) in the exhaust of my TS250 crosser, and it was really awkward to get anything to cover the place it was in.

I used a load of bandage with foil on top and covered with some wire to hold it all in place.

If it'll hold up over the front of a 2-stroke expansion chamber over winter, it should be fine for you!

If i have to repair it each week with the putty i already got till i get another system then i will. I just wanna stop the putty getting wet again as i think all the wet weather was the cause of it coming out. Ive used that exhaust wrap before its quite good stuff. So long as it doesnt catch fire ill go and put the panel back on now

exhaust putty + empty tin of beans (or some other tin of some such) + cut the top and bottom off then cut it lengthways + apply exhaust putty to hole + wrap tin round and cut to appropriate size + jubilee clip it = Master Bodger

yeah thats great mongo, and i had thought of that, but the hole is underneath some sort of brace between the pipes which makes it a really f-king akward to get to and it right underneath the engine itself. I get paid in a few weeks and one of the first things im buying is a system!

if you aint got the cash for a bandage mate use a bean tin as said by mongo and some wire to tie it on and as its by a brace you'll have to get the scissors out mate!

how old's your bike mate and how many miles it done?

cuz my 7r is a 97 P2 with 13,000 on clock and although the pipes r a bit rusty, they seem solid

Mines a P2 also, P reg. Its done 23K but when i bought the bike the pipes were mint as far as i could tell. I think it was the fact id ridden it through winter and not washed it very often, along with being stored outside with a cover on it. But i hear that the system on the 7 can rot very quickly, but i am surprised that its rotted and holed through where it has, ill get a picture next time of it. Id understand if its just where the headers bend back behind the front wheel but its not

they always go at the collectors, the system is mild steel and thin, same on the 400's the standard systems are pants, it`ll rot from the inside near the joins where water vapour will sit and rust away.

The other thing is you dont wana bodge it to good cos you will put off buyin the new system time an time again cos you will have better things to spend it on

the 750 standard system is known to rot in no time at all, the bandages are about £6 or so and work a treat

or the bean can i've seen used before...
