Well, personality counts. I like Stoner, I can't not respect what he's doing with the Ducati and I have listened to him in the past and thought he sounded like your typical Aussie pro: Tough, laid back and blunt as hell. Rock on Casey.
However, the reason Vale is and will always be the beloved scion of motorsport is simple: He's the personification of the motorcycling. It dominates his flesh like so much soul pushing to erupt at every oppertunity; he's vivacious, cheeky, incredibly charismatic, sexy but not butch or dominated by ego or machismo.
He's everyone's best mate. You love him because he is everything you want to be and then some.
Ice men come and go with varying success, but nobody will talk about Schumacher with any relish. He was just a machine. A German Uberweld.
Rossi however, will always be cherished by all. If you had to choose someone to face down the Devil in 20 laps, you'd take Rossi. He might just fall off at the third corner and doom you to eternal torment, but you wouldn't mind. Because you know he'd laugh all the way to the pit ..
And thats the way I want it to stay for a very long time to come!
