only been 3 times this year so far :P 4th trip in a couple of weeks. Lap count upto a couple of hundred... Does that qualify me to answer?

Used to ride all the way there through France and Belgium - its about 300 miles and takes about 5 hours allowing for a food stop.
We now rent a van and go that way

When are you planning on going over?

The biggest bit of advice I can offer you when you are there is. It is NOT a track day, road rules apply! Look in your mirrors and let faster bikes and cars past - believe me there will be plenty of them.

Get a pax lap or two if possible

look in your mirrors

dont crash - you have to pay for recovery, armco, marshall time, track closure if necessary, cement dust for oil spills etc etc.

did I mention look in your mirrors and let faster things past.

Do not ride what you cant see - you'll never learn the place. It takes between 50 and 100 laps to learn the line

let us know when you're heading over there

i have no idea when i want to go over but hoppfully soon! proably next month, or the month after!

do you do a days worth of riding or just a few laps? (even if a few laps are 40 mins or so :smt003 ) id want to do a few days of none stop riding i think!

is a pax lap were you sit in the car while they go round? could be helpfull that!

i'll try and keep to the dont crash rule :smt017

you're starting to get quite late in the season for good opening hours

do you do a days worth of riding or just a few laps? (even if a few laps are 40 mins or so :smt003 ) id want to do a few days of none stop riding i think!
you wont be able to do non stop riding
a) its about 14Euros a lap :P
b) its physically exhausting - I usually manage sets of 3.

i usually do about 12 laps a day I guess, I was there for 4 days over easter and did 55 laps. and we usually go out there for a few days at a time.
the trip we are doing in august - its open friday afternoon, last thing saturday and all day sunday. gives the body time to recover, and it gives time to have a good session in the night :-D

when it is open all weekend, it tends to get very busy.
is a pax lap were you sit in the car while they go round? could be helpfull that!

i'll try and keep to the dont crash rule :smt017
yeh sorry, i shoulda said passenger lap.
its worth while doing that - gives you an idea of how different the place is to how it appears on the play station :P

really - dont crash. My other half had a low speed lowside there in june - his first crash in about 500 laps. it was slightly damp and it is 180 euro recovery fee assuming that you have the cash then and their.

make sure you look in your mirrors as well, if you have an accident on the left hand side of the track with a faster vehicle, the police will be called and it will be deemed your fault. Road laws apply and you are supposed to be riding on the right all the time. Indicate right to let faster traffic past, and if you see someone behind you with their left hand indicator on - let them past.

thats another tip - if its raining, stay in the bar. It is like riding on ice when it is wet.

The ride over is quite alright - just gets a little monotonous over belgium. The last 100km or so is gorgeous sweeping twisties - couple of very deceptive bends tho!

let us know if you need any info

that bit puts me off abit sounds more like a road without speed limits than a track! do you mean that racing lines are not aloud?

I'll have to talk to friends might go and do a lap then onto some of the mountin roads! :smt003

still you've got to do it atleast once havent you!

the official status of the nurburgring on public days is a one way de-restricted toll road
interpret from that what you will - but do you really think that i keep going back to ride around on teh right all the time? ;-)

It is a road, and road rules do apply, but if theres nothing behind you, sure take the racing line. Just use your mirrors and if there are faster things behind you let them through.

this is where so many people (particularly brits) go wrong. They treat it like riding a short track. it isnt, you need to use your mirrors but its still great fun!

I dont watn to put anyone off going - I love the place! It is a unique and fantastic place and coming back in from a lap gives you a real buzz. but the more people that understand and respect the rules the safer it is for everyone.

have a look at Ben lovejoys site http://www.nurburgring.org.uk

If you're over there the same weekend as us - let us know and if you want I'll take you round and show you the lines.

there are some gorgeous roads in teh area too - one trip we just spent a morning riding to different locations aroudn the track and spectating.

now you're ready to ride the ring :-)

We're heading over there August bank holiday. They'll be me on my gixxer, my other half on a K1200R and our friend on another K1200R and we will probably be joined by an RSV factory and an SV thou. We're not riding over - got fed up of that after doing it about 10 times :P
its open Friday afternoon, saturday evening and a full day on Sunday.
PB are out there that week too - so they'll be a lot of brits around.

However, if you are after track time, it is a full weekend the first weekend in september - open all day Saturday and Sunday IIRC. If you head over then, let us know and I can probably point you in the direction of someone who is over there who will take you around

Please please please please read my boyfriends thoughts/advice on riding the Nurburgring, he's done over 500 laps so he does have some experience and very valid points[urlhttp://jocke.selincite.com/bikes/riding-nurburgring[/url]
also look at Bens website http://www.nurburgring.org it's got a lot of good advice and information that will help

another couple of things to note,
The ring is a road, so your bike must be road legal - if you have a race can on, you run the risk of not being allowed on track. There is an official 95dB limit. I have a scorpion can with the baffle in, apparently that is meant to be 98dB and I have never had any problems with it.
They do noise test, and if you are too noisey they will refuse entry.
As it is a road, this also means you have to have road tyres, headlights and indicators, MOT, and insurance. I've seen many people turned away for not being road legal. Bring your MOT certificate, insurance certificate and driving licence with you. It is a legal requirement to carry these with you once you get the other side of the water

be warned - you'll love it and want to go back!

Id love to take the bike to spain :-) when are you off?

The bf and I keep meaning to ride to Finland one year - its just getting enough time off work thats the problem

You know when you do these rides in to europe do you go by the tunel or somethin into france and take it from there?
Remember speed kills, so does smoking, drinking, drugs, fast food and many more good things

the best crossing I have everdone was Hoverspeed Dover to ostend, however they dont do this any more.
I tend to take the chunnel, purely because it is *so* convient, ride the bike on and you're in france 35mins later. However, its a bit on the expensive side

Also done Dover - Calais on the Ferry, generally quite cheap and gives you the opportunity to eat

and done Dover - dunkirk, similar sort of price but it gets you a bit further up France. The downside is thre isnt much to do on the Ferry and it takes over 2 hours.

used to ride all teh way, but we got bored of that and with doing 3 or 4 trips per year it was starting to get expensive with rear tyres and servicing!
So we bought a Grand espace and stuck the bikes in that at easter (see May or June issue of performance bikes for a pic :P) and for the next three trips there are 3 of us going, so we hired a long wheelbase transit and stuck three bikes in there. Abba stands make things so easy!!

my dads got some DB killers in his bike so i can just unscrew one of them for the weekend, he'll never no hes haf deaf anyway

i was over in spain a cuple of months ago hangliding again, we had a 1.6 cmax rental car and i had a awsome time even in that big, slow, boat like handeling thing! the roads are just amazing! they havent got their heads around strate roads yet so there all twisting all over the place, and due to the EU's money there all brand new a perfectly laid, not to mention the amazing breath taking views! Only down side is the spanish cant drive for toad and will do very ramdom stuff all the time. The roads are worth the risk tho!

should be going september sort of time i think.

isnt Finland abit cold? (i never took geography at school :smt003 )
