hi all just joined up as im currently looking into buying a zxr400. im 17 and live in bedford, ive liked bikes for many years and cant wait until i can get one
o and ive heard that i can ride a zxr400 restricted to 33bhp at 17 years old on a car lisence. is this true???

nope, not true I'm afraid.

On a car licence you can only ride up to a 125 with L Plates, and you need to complete Compulsory Basic Training (CBT - usually a day long course with an approved school) before you can even do that.

To ride a ZXR, you'll need to pass your bike test. After that you will be restricted to 33bhp for two years - ZXR's can easily be restricted to meet this. Once you have had your licence two years you will be able to take the restrictors out.

i thought you still needed to have your provisional bike licence?
so nope, not true im afraid - you need a licence to ride a ZXR

Car Licence plus CBT Certificate = Provisional motorcycle entitlement.

If you don't have a car licence, then yes, you will need to apply for a provisional licence, AND do your CBT.

I can't find it in writing on the DVLA website, but it's fairly easy to check. Look at the paper bit of your car licence. There's a box labelled "provisional entitlements" or something similar. It should have a letter A and a little picture of a motorbike, along with the dates that the entitlement is valid for. If it's there, you have provisional motorcycle entitlement (with a CBT).

Of course Caz neither you or I can verify this....unless you happen to know someone without a bike licence who happens to carry the paper bit around with them.
