Remember that until recently the Lotus Elise was using the K series lump. I had a Rover 220 Coupe and that was great fun. Shame the chasis twisted so much when cornering fast. :smt009

As for high mileage, it depends on the age of the car I reckon. For example... If it's 5 years old and done 120k miles you can pretty much guarantee that it's a rep mobile and it's mostly been motorway miles which quite frankly is nothing. On top of that it'll probably have been serviced undr company expenses so things will been done on time under a lease agreement.

If however the car is 10 years old and done 40k miles I would stay clear because it's probably just been driven to and from the train station all week and never really got up to temperature. That's why I would never buy a old low mileage bike with 'only dry miles' in the ad. Rubber seals/bushes rot after time if there's no heat put through them.

As long as stuff gets done on time and when it needs doing, there's no reason a modern engine shouldn't last 300k miles. Mate of mine had a 225k mile Vectra before the head gasget went, and he was a nutter. :smt001 My BMW 535 had done 120k miles and on the last service I did we pressure tested the V8 and it was at 98% across the board. As long as you keep changing the oil the engine should be fine.

I reckon you want to be looking at the affects of weather more. Look at the underneath of the car, wheel arches, etc, and defo pay a lot of atention to the radiator.

the reason some of the rovers look like hondas is cuz honda bought rover out years ago. then they sold it to bmw who only wanted it for the mini.

i dont actually think the V6 engine was a k-series, but i could be wrong

Honda never owned Rover, but they had a partnership with them that involved sharing designs. Rover was, until 1994, owned by British Aerospace, who sold it to BMW - pissing off Honda in the process. Probably the start of the decline - at the time they were pretty good cars, but the 25 and 45 they were selling when they finally went bust were still decade old hondas.

The Rover designed K-Series engines consisted of inline fours from 1.1 to 2l, plus the 'KV6' engine, which as you might guess, is the V6.

bloody hell i sound like such a rover geek don't I?

I'm not, honest. But I do have a mate who's dad used to work for them and another who's run several rovers (at least one of which I went with him to buy). Plus I'm perfectly capable of using google and wikipedia to back up my guesses :smt002

Apparently the are less ST24's sold each year than there are Ferrari 430's. So if exclusivity is what you are looking for Rob then your in. Shame its a Ford though, everyone knows they make cars out of old ladders and corn sacks, goddamn hill billies.

one of the most reliable cars i ever bought was a 1.0l metro G reg 6 months tax and mot for £50 it run like a dream 46000 miles on the clock, it had been crunched down the drivers side but i loved it to bits, the missus hated it and bought me a rover gti (the one that fell apart after 3 months) i would buy another metro today if i had the cash.

"Last November I fitted a 1.8 VVC Engine and Rover 100 gearbox"

it's a rover engine. but prob considerably more powerful than anything that would have been joined to that gearbox originally. it wouldn't break but it would wear out quicker.

and you'd be amazed what does fit together! more of an obstacle with the honda engines is that they spin in the opposite direction to most others. so if you mated it to a metro gearbox you'd have five reverse gears :smt003
