bike wont start.

Post by Ropey »

Howdy,
Not the first time I've been here with this question!! The last time the problem was the neutral switch.
Every once in a while it will fire but most of the time it's dead and when it does fire half way down the road it grinds to a hault. Right so, ive checked the neutral and side stand switch and the battery is brand new so it aint them. A mate suggested it might be the coils? this i where my limited knowledge runs out,. I know where they are but i'm fecked if i know what they do and how to check that they're doin what there supposed to!

Any help, suggestions would be great!

Cheers

Basically it could either be the CDI or the coil ... probably the easiest way to check is to find someone with a zxr and borrow their bits I guess? The other alternative is that the carbs are flooding - check to see if your spark plugs are firing (pull out the HT leads, and use a spare plug touched against your frame - be careful of high voltages!). If it's firing ok it'll be the carbs, if not either the CDI or the coil.

as said above just don't hold the ht leads when you fire it up :-)
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

Cheers for the advise.
pulled out the leads one by one and checked them with a spare plug, no spark on any of them! put them all back in, had a smoke, shouted at the coils for a while, removed the leads from both coils and pluged them back in and crossed me fingers and the temperental b*tch started WTF! Now i'm guessin since there was no spark on any of them it's more than likely the cdi?
any suggestions?

I think it would also be worth checking the pick up coil, does anybody know if the coils can be fired by mimicking the action of the rotor plate about the pickup coil with a piece of steel?

Failing that method probe the junction of pick up coil and cdi to check the voltage is stable, although it will obviously fluctuate. Then try the cdi.
