rob's partly right. You can't have one engine driving the front wheels and one driving the back with no mechanical link between them. I think the argument is basically "what if you were going round a corner and one of them cut out?".

I've seen various lotus seven reps with two bike engines in the front, but they both drive the back wheels via a common propshaft. You could do the same with one in the front and one in the back, but you'd have to mechanically connect them - which just isn't going to happen easily with a transverse engine.

I think it came up on scrapheap challenge (or a similar programme) a couple of years back - someone built a 4WD beach racer out the front ends of two black cabs - they had to disable one to legally drive it to the beach.

If both engines are driving the same transmission your ok, but seperate engine for seperate ends isnt allowed. I also beleieve this was on Top Gear this year when they built those insane limosines and James May had two front ends of some car.

makes sense.. im going from the z-cars ultima.. which had one engine driving the front and one driving the back with the engines only linked by the brains of the traction control system. Which is the same as they used in tiger's Z100r (?) 4wd, twin engined lotus 7 rep.. and i figured that had to be road legal, as it holds the world record for 0-60-0 in a road legal car.
