First Ride

OOO its good, after taking up the insurance policy earlier today I went out and well... the car has to go. Only thing was that the battery didnt seem to have any charge when I got back, It was an 8 mile ride to college and I took a 20 mile route back.. with an hour break between the both.. was wondering if that would be enough to kill a battery if the regulator is blown. Also does anyone have any diagrams or information on what pins of the regulator/rectifier show what voltage they are and what they are connected to.

Glad you're enjoying it! I still remember the huge buz I got the first time I took mine out after passing my DAS! :smt003 Actually I got the same buz after it had been off the road for months even though I'd been riding a VFR750!

The wiring diagrams are in the back of the manuals, so they're probably up on this site! :smt002

They may well be different, so it'll help if you know which model it is?

20 miles shoould be easily enough to put a full charge back to the battery, so it sounds like there's a good chance the reg/rec unit has died - but start at the battery first! Has the bike been stood for long? The batteries tend to last for around 18 months of everyday heavy use, I found, but if they're left connected while the bike is stood they will need replacing much sooner.

If the battery checks out ok then look at the wiring between the battery, reg/rec and alternator.

Then check the Alternator output, and then the reg/rec.

The last thing you want is to be shelling out on parts you don't need! :smt002

If the regulator has gone I'll do my best to use all my electronics knowledge to make a replacement, I know maplins offer componants at pence and at the end of the day ten that cost £3 is still cheaper than one that costs £60. What do people spend on batterys?
I've got an optimate on it atm, I brought the bike last summer and took it to bits over winter, the battery was left disconnected over winter and was flat as a fart by the time I put it back in.

If you've got the skills then definitely go for it! They're an absolute rip-off!

Even better - how about a quick guide showing the rest of us how to do it, with some pics and stuff?

A battery should cost you around £35 for a decent but cheap one.

I can tell you for a start you will need 4 diodes with high inverse voltage's to make a rectifier, a couple of large capacitors to produce a smooth DC signal, and a zener diode for voltage stabilisation at the output. :smt001
