Is my bike an import or not!

Hi all,

I took my bike to a garage the other day to get new tyres, the mechanic was checking the lights etc, he told me that the bike wouldn’t pass it's M.O.T. because the lights on the bike were pointing to the right and said it was an import, I was a bit baffled because I read up on imported bikes etc and on my bike it has uk clocks, on the right side on the handle bars it has the on and off switch for the lights,it definately has two light bulbs, plus on the V5 form the date it was first registered states the same date as uk registered.

check if it has carb heaters and tell me the number/colour of sticker on the cdi.

Could be that its a uk bike but its fittted with import headlights for whatever reason. I had this on my 7R as the light flicked up on the right hand side, its for pedestrians apparently, had to change the headlights unfortunately. You might get away with a bit of tape to cover the flick? I think thats a popular mod on some lights, but dunno if its a requirement to have the flick on the left hand side???

Hi guys,

thanks for the info, me bike is still in the garage, it was getting an oil change and the sump plug was rounded off, so the sump and plug needs to get rethreaded, I go back to work tomorrow night, I wont be back until next month and wont be able to check the cdi etc, unless me mate can check he's going to pick it up for me.

If I have to change the light, would I only need the headlight on its own and not the lens cover, I’ve seen a couple on eBay I’ve listed the two different ones as follows:

the second one is a H model mate so no good if yours is an L model the first is L model :smt001

I spoke to Brian at AMS-Motorsport he said he has plenty in stock, so as and when ill need one ill get one, thanks again, take it easy. :smt002

i belive all japaneese bikes are built in jaapan,then exported,none are built in uk, :smt004

lol.. thats true if taken literaally :D

I think he's on about region customisations.

While were on this thread.. is there a sticky any where detailing the differences between the different region models of the ZXR? If not could we make one :-)

This is all L model stuff but from what i've gathered. All you've gotta do is check your bike against the things I say below. You could also check your log-boook, if it's an import it will have 'Previously used overseas' in the special notes on the front cover.. if its been passed off as a UK bike but is infact a JP / EU bike then somethings dodgy... :/

UK Bike has MPH clocks that go upto 160mph, I think it uses standard H4 bulbs too?
EU bikes has KMH clocks that go upto 240km/h. Uses the 35/60watt bulbs.
JP bikes has KMH clocks that go upto 180km/h. Uses the 35/60watt bulbs.

Carb info is sketchy, some models have 30mm bores, some have 32, and with / without carb heaters.

Lots of variations in the different CDI's but the UK CDI has a blue sticker and the letter 'M' on it (this ones an easy one to check as it's right under the seat, which takes 1 bolt to remove!)

The blue 'M' one is the least restricted of them all, some limit RPM's to 10,000, top speed to 180km/h etc etc.. the UK one as far as I know has the highest RPM limit of standard CDI's and isn't speed restricted.

The UK bikes have a switch for the lights to turn them on / off, the JP bikes have auto-lights.. not sure about the euro models. (again this is easy enough to check if your bike is an import.. does it have light switch?)

The UK bikes have side-lights in the headlights,

We should compile all the differences if there isn't already one :-)

All parts are transplantable, tho some require more work than others. such as matching wiring looms etc.

i'll look into copiling an import thread when i fix my pc cos i just can't do anything on my missus laptop :smt009

Can someone shine a light on this problem that is driving me completely insane!

I have a Kawasaki ZXR 400, L9, 2000 Model but i am struggling on finding out if it is an import or not.

I took it to a Kawasaki dealer and they couldn't even tell me :rant :rant :rant :rant :rant :rant

Anyway, how is the easiest way to find out if its and import or not i have the british stamped clocks R/H light switch.

For a first post that was more than a little unpleasant so do me a favour and tone the language down a bit OK

I'd be very surprised to find a L9 that was an import..................if its from a European country it might have a right hand drive headlight but that could have been changed in which case it would be very hard to tell.

ZXR400 built for the Japanese market come restricted to 110mph (approx) and 10K revs if you unplug the speedo..................of course it could have had and most likely will have had the restriction overcome/removed

And finally what difference does it make anyway they are all the same at the end of the day ? ?

if its an import it usually says so on the log book.
