Advance ignition timing.

Post by harrygila »

Hello everyone,
Ive been told by mate to improve the mid-range power, it can be done by turning the timing around 4 degrees, i dont really get what he says.
maybe anyone can help?
cheers.

You can't actualy adjust the ignition timing unless your get a different rotor.

And if you want to adjust the valve timing you'd need SP or another adjustable camshaft

mmmm....
he was saying about adjusting the timing rotor on the crankshaft by turning it 4 degrees clock wise, but i just get confused...
but that actually make senses, i think that the same think like increasing the valve clearance.
but not really sure.....

The ignition standard rotor has a little slot in the back of it that fits into a pin on the end of the crankshaft.
There is no way to turn it 4 degress unless you make the little slot wider or remove the pin on the crank.

Or you could alter the rotor where the pick up "sees" it

Doing any of this accurately would not be easy

If memory sreves me right I've seen an adjustable ignition timing systen for the ZXR on e-bay recently..........

I found it

Its actually for a ZXR750 but has been modified to work on 400

cheers mate...
that helps a lot...
anyway, is that your bike on your display picture? that looks nice...
have you got any idea how to run a bike with total loss circuit? i mean running it without the magneto and generator.
im building a race bike here, but im very bad in electronics, i dont even understand how they work, lol..
so far ive got the engine fully rebuilt (new valves, shells, rocker arms, etc) but just get stuck on wiring because i have removed the magneto and the generator out.

I've never built a loom from scratch just cut out the bits i didn't need from a standard one.
There is a place that sells race looms

My ZXRs run total loss but I still have the starter..............but thats for the chop soon because i've bought a set of starting rollers
