Please help with Carb Pipes and Air Box connections

Post by Bilko1000 »

Hi, I recently had a new set of carbs fitted to the bike. The mechanic returned my old bits and I noticed he returned 4 funny looking T-Pieces with brackets and screws which seem to fit into my
old carbs at the bottom where the float bowls are next to the fuel mixture screw. These 4 T pieces linked with three small tubes have on one end and elbow shaped rubber piece with a plastic cylinder
attached. At the other end of the line of T-pieces linked by three rubber tubes there is one long tube. The whole lot can join together as a complete circuit and fit at the bottom of the carbs but I have no idea what this pipework is for and why it is not fitted. Unfortunately I cannot ask the mechanic because we fell out over the poor running of the bike when he returned it. Can anyone tell me what this pipe work does and how to connect it properly. I can secure the T-Pieces to the bottom of each carb via some brackets that screw into the carbs and fit over a notch at the top of each T-Piece. I though these were perhaps some form of carb de-icer pipes but I am not sure. I cannot see for instance where these could possibly connect into the radiator and they are the perfect length and size to connect into eachother at the bottom of the carbs. The plastic container thingy has like a hollow screw in it with a gauze filter possibly for filtering air, I doubt it could be water. The online manuals do not show this pipework in any significant detail so I am stumped.

Also there appears to be drain plug connected to a pipe which should connect to the bottom left hand side of my air box but it is missing from my bike. Should I simply plug this hole up in my air box as it appears only to be a drain hole anyway which should be connected to a drain plug held on by a clip I believe. Can someone please confirm this is correct.

Finally my fuel tank has a small protusion with a hole for possibly venting air or fuel from the tank. I have no pipe connected to this either. Is this something I need to sort out, will it affect the running of the bike.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

the pipes with the t pieces are either your balancing pipes or carb heaters can you post a pic of them or the carbs as they are now?

you should really stick a pipe on the airbox as its there for a purpose, to drain excess fluids and crap from the airbox otherwise they end up in the carbs and shitting them up.

Yes you should have a pipe from the rear of the tank, usually exits on the right hand side between the engine and swinger, but obviously they get moved when people remove the tank.

Thanks Mastero, the pipe from the air box does not drain anything until you remove the drain plug I believe, so I think if I add the pipe I will need to block it off also until I think the air box needs to be drained.

Here is a link relating the the carb pipes I am talking about.

They are the pipes that connect to that green canister in the picture. They are currently off my carb I have an L3 import and I dont know what they do.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5651 another link here.

Can you advise me whether or not the T Pieces linking these pipes to the Green Canister and linking the carbs should be installed?, what do they do? and how do I connect them up.

Thanks

in that case they are your carb heaters, they are suposed to give a bit of heat to the carbs in the colder climates, don't think they will do much here in the uk so you could probably leave them off.

if you wnat to ride through tthe winter/colder wather carb heaters will be a massive help. either sort them or you will need to use a fuel treatment as and when the weather dictates.
