Dead Battery & Sqeeky Rear End.

Post by Brett »

I sorted out my handling problem(see pulling to the right post)by taking the wheel off and putting it on again. I done it by hoisting the bike up by a strap around the front of the frame. When I put the bike back down and sat on it it squeeked. If I bounce the back end it sqeeks???
When I got the bike it had a dead battery, which I thought was due to the previous owner having loads of those god awful neony light things all over the bike. I took these off lest I was laughed off the road, replaced the battery and all seemed well. I've been using the bike now for some time(no real long journeys and mostly day time)with no problems. Last night I was out for about fifteen minutes and it started spluttering. Instinctively went for the reserve tap and still spluttered, but only when reving really high. Bike cut out and would not turn over(also when turned over rev counter went up?). Bumped it and it went, but indicators wouldn't work properly. Charged battery and it's fine now. I am thinking alternator, but why did it not do this before?

God that took me ages to type.

For the squeeking, check theres not a cable rubbing up against something. And also find out where its coming from.

As for the battery, it could well the the alternator or possibly even the rectifier/regulator. Check out the manuals, there should be a way to test the reg/rec to see if its working, same for the alternator id have thought.

Definately not a cable. It's far too loud. It sounds like it's coming fron the spring.

does your swinging arm need greasing? spray some wd40 around the moving parts, swinger pivot, shock linkages do them one at a time and see if it disappears, could be everything needs a general lubing.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

I think that's exactly what it needs, either that or setting fire to. It's off to the mechanics whilst I'm away, thought about getting rid of it, but then I remembered all the good times, those corners, oh those corners, so have now decided whatever the cost I'm gonna stick with it.

I did try wd40 when it started, but no luck?

I take it you have taken it for a ride since? Maybe needs a run to loosen things up a bit?

Have a sniff round by the regulator/rectifier, chances are its that if the battery isnt charging.

Pretend you're talking to someone who although has been riding for many years, has always had their little brother around to fix their bike and then moved up north and knows very little about their workings.

Is that the metal box behind the battery? I'll check the old manual.

regulator sits in a really akward place, behind the mesh of the seat unit on the left hand side if memory serves me correctly. Right by the fuel tap.
