mixture settings

Post by parby81 »

I know these have come up before, and i know i can look in the manual.
Currently I have mine set at two turns out, which is slightly more than the manual recommends. I just wanted to know what others are using in real world riding? two turns out, or two and a half?

Cheers
Mart

a lot of factors come into this, jets. airfilter, general wear on the engine, exhaust system so hard to say.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

cheers guys, i know al of this.

The manual says just under two turns out, and obviously this is just a starting point. I was merely wondering if people tendend to start a bit richer, say two and a half turns out and go from there.

Cheers anyway

i tend to start at 2.5 turns out and then work back in until it starts to "hang" then back out enough to stop it doing so.. if that makes any sense.

The H manual says 2 1/4 turns, mine hangs at that though. Going to have a play tommorow.
Couldn't get it right atall with my stubby, so just shoved the normal can on and set the screws back to factory to see how it went from there.

Could poorly balanced carbs effect it? Don't know how mine are, but they havn't beeon done for a long time.

Just to clarify things (not for me), incase some people don't really understand (not me), what is it you're actually turning (not that I don't know, of course)?

And how is it that someone (this might be me) can have stripped his whole clutch and drivetrain apart, be elbow-deep in cams and valves thinking he's all clever and stuff, and not know about something this simple (ahem, not me confuddled )???

yes that would be the screws, and yes i have taken my bike to bits as well, always have done always will biggrin biggrin Same with my cars. I was merely trying to ask what people tended to start at before they tinkered.

So this is what people should be having a fiddle with when they change cans/exhaust systems/filters?

nah man. they have little or no effect on running low mid to high revs.
Its just to set a nice fast setting idle. if you wanted to do a proper job, every turn after standard ( 2turns out, or whatever it is) of the mixture screws to richen the mix(anti-clockwise), you should go up a pilot jet size, or half a jet size, cant rember exactly...but you get my drift.
The main jet is the one to get right first, then yr needles, but both effect each other.

If yr having probs with revs hanging, another way to do it, is adjust your idle to about 3k. it can hang all it wants then :smt001
racers trick to stop the rear hopping as much when yr braking hard

Hi,

Unbalanced carbs do mess your idle up depending on how bad they're out. My mixture screws are currently set to 2 3/4 on cylinders 1 &4 and 3 on 2 & 3. You'll find that the outta cylinders run richer then the middle ones. If your idle hangs when blipping the throttle (needle hanging at 2000rpm before dropping to 1350) then the mixture is too lean. Best way to check the mixture is checking the spark plugs. I've done all my tunning myself and I'll tell ya it's all in trial and error to get it spot on.

Let us know how you got on.

Regards

Rich
