Toad below 4k

Post by parby81 »

Well as some of you may know from reading previous threads i have had the engine out and back in agai with the head gasket now done. At first she atarted fine and was a bit naff below 4k and then fine up until 8k revs. Then very hesitant then took of again. Also had the problem of hanging. Though would sometimes hang some times not (poss air leak)

I rechecked the balancing and found that to be off. So i re balanced the carbs at 2k revs, and adjusted the mixture. Flat spot gone, was great above 4k all the way, but idle was pants and still hanging. Adjusted the mixture more, and can't seem to get rid of the hanging (though again this is temperamental). So i have put the mixture back to roughly standard.

So here i am with a bike that runs great above 4k revs. Pulls cleanly all the way, really taking off at 8-10 as usual. Whack the throttle open, no hesitancy. But below 4k especially when pulling away, it is pants. If you open the throttle fully, she really bogs down, gentle seems better, though that may be my imagination. Its as though the fueling is completely off, though as i say, whack it open, bogs down and very hesitant, get to 4k and its absolutely fine!!
So what do people think is wrong? :smt017 :smt017

I think if you open the throttle quickly and it bogs, isnt that a sign of being too rich?

At this point i sit back and say 'try a shot of redex and see how it goes'. :smt002

and just to add, there was apparently a blue flame exhaust on before, now its back to standard, though i am told the jetting wasn't altered before. And if too rich why would that only bog down up to 4k revs?
Only other thing changed when doing the HG was the reg/rect though i can't see how this would affect things. Though the bike didn't have this problem before doing the HG

but you have adjusted the mixture settings. How long have the carbs been sat while doing the HG?

Well isn't that funny now!! I might stick the old one back on tomorrow and see if that makes any difference. Though then i'm back to the charging problems :smt010 Can anyone point me in the direction of the test you can do to check a reg/rect?

well to be honest it wasn't really a chargin problem. I was riding back round the M(crawl)25 in heavy traffic so had my full beam on (new battery by the way, properly charged) when coming off the m25, went to indicate and my mate behind said the light was dim and just stayed on. Coming up to the lights at the bottom of the slip, pull in the clutch and it dies. Have to bump start as battery is dead. Ride home from there with the lights off, get home and it starts on the button. Ride everywhere with my lights on (not full beam though) and haven't had the problem again since changing the reg/rect. hmmmm :smt017

I can't find the little one shot pots anywhere. Admittedly i only tend to go in shell garages, but none of my local ones have it in!

well that is very bizarre. Was the new reg/rect new or 2nd hand new? mine was a 2nd hand new. Seems odd we are both having the same probs having both fitted a new one. why should this affect the running though, particularly below 4k revs?

it was off an L9 so yeah 2nd hand new and it shouldn't affect the way the bike runs! :smt017
