Advice Needed

Hi, just a few little problems I could use some help on...

1. When I first got my bike (last week), the throttle had a bit of loose freeplay before the acceleration kicked in (you could also rev the bike by pushing the twistgrip!). I assumed the throttle cable just needed tightening which I planned on doing soon but I was riding home from college today and the throttle cable snapped (Had to use the clutch and pootle home at walking pace!). So my question is, where can I buy another cable and how hard is it to fit?

2. Secondly, my bike is a 2000 UK model and only has 8000 miles on the clock. However, it has no service history so I thought i'd do some of the basics like an oil and sparkplug change. What else would be a good idea to change replace on a bike of my mileage with no history? air filter aswell maybe? Anyadvice would be appreciated.
