how do those shot gun carts work exactly then,,, do they have a charge inside the actual cart. or is it the gun?

Spring action. pulling the charging handle on the shotgun draws three bbs from the cartridge (which is essentially just a magazine), and at the same time drives a spring back, with a piston on it, which is released and pushes the air out of the barrel, along with the BBs. Gas shotguns work with the propellant in the cartridge, but if you want a gas shotgun, you've got very limited choice, and more pennies on the initial purchase. Most of them feature self ejecting shells, though, which looks awesome.

The Gas shotguns, essentially yes, though they use the gas charge rather than explosives.
