Cam chain tensioner?

Dunno if it's the vid or my memory, but that actually sounded about normal for a ZXR400 to me. You should have pulled the clutch in so we could hear the difference with that...

What rev's was that ticking over at? Sounded a bit low so your getting chain "slop" from the cam chain, should sit around 1250 rpm. Don't be shy to turn up as much as 1500 if it makes it sound better - as long as the bike doesn't "clonk" into gear doing so!

If the motor has done 25K+ miles then the chain could be on its way out and the tensioner is at full load, if the noise becomes louder while driving it is fooked and you need to address it ASAP. If it shut's up it's more likely the above.

cheers guys
pulling in the clutch only makes a difference when i have had it in gear as i then get another noise which stops when i pull in clutch .....
tick over is sitting at about 1000 rpm so i will turn it up a tad......
bike has around 35k on the clock but someone told me that u should never have to change the cam chain how true that is i don't know..

would it be worth changing cam chain and tensioner and if so is this a tricky job for Rob to do :pmsl

Hi,

Idle is suppose to be at 1200rpm +/- 50rpm.

Tip: Make sure the bike is fully warmed up before setting the idle, warmed up as in the temp gauge reading half just about when the fan kicks in. Any tuning to carbs must be when the engine is warm.

Does sound like cam chain slap to me. If the clutch is pulled in and the rattle doesn't get any quiter, I would start with simple things first.

Reset the tensioner, clean etc...

Then go from there.

Regards

Rich

Well i had a listen today and its about as normal as a ZXR gets. We found that the ticking was the fuel pump trying to pump nothing because the fuel tap hadnt been turned on (isnt that right mark :smt016 ).

It bogs when you give a a handful too so a dyno session will sort it :)

Otherwise its all spot on. :excited
