Undertray... can't get the bugger off!

Hi,

I've booked a week off work to do some work to the bike, I've decided to go from the aftermarket undertray back to the OE Kawasaki 1. Now reason being is because some numpty who had the bike before has bend the seatlock bracket upwards to fit the grab handle and my rear seat doesn't seat right and rattles alot! (mentioned in another thread somewere)

Anyway, I got a spare (which is straight) and the 2 bolts at the very back that hold the undertray to the frame just keeps going round and round. I've tried putting lockgrips on the plastic side to hold the nut inside but no good. I'm running out of ideas fast! Anyone got any tips or ideas on how do undo these?

I know how much you guys like looking at pics.

I could, but the friction from the drill bit to the bolt would melt the plastic making it usless

Surpose I could cut the head off and push it out maybe? but I dont know what type of nut is on the otherside as it's embedded in the plastic.

Hehe cheers, bout time she had some tarted up hoses and 1's that work

Anyway, I've circled the bolt on the image that won't undo.


I have no electric in the garage (bloody council) so I'm quite fooked for power tools. I've even tried heating up a small allan key with a lighter and wedge it in to stop the bolt spinning but yet again, no good

I've got plenty of s/s nuts, bolts, washers etc.. so yeah surpose I could, I'll try and hack at it today with something.

Any other ideas, throw them this way!

hello mate have you tried using a socket on one side to hold the bolt form spinning and then turn the nut on the other side with a spanner or something. Thats how I did mine when I went for my Track Day. Try and get some penetrating oil on the bolt.

I can't get a spanner on the nut from the undertray because it's like inside the plastic if that makes any sence?

It's so badly stuck, that no matter which way I turn the bolt, the nut keeps on spinning.

think the only way to do it is gring the head off the bolt then it should push out from the other side.

HI mate - I had this problem. It is cause by the nut being held captive by the plastic shroud on the inside of the tray. Over time the plastic gives up and the nut just rotates freely I used loads of WD40, cut eenough off the plastic shroud to get big pliers on the nut and then go for it.

Even if you decide to drill it you need to be able to stop the nut turning so it is essential to be able to get pliers on it. Cutting the plastic shround doesnt harm as this isnt a critical part of holding the undertray on.

I reckon if I was faced with this again I would just cut the head off the bolt (hacksaw) and knock the bolt out the "wrong way"

I had this one as well. I got a hacksaw blade between the bolt head and the frame took the head off the bolt and then 'persuaded' the undertray off with the thread still sticking out of it.

Actually I think I then replaced the undertray so I'm not sure that I ever managed to free the remaining stud.
