Engine not running right

Post by quickz »

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if any of you could help me with an issue im having with my zxr. Basically I got a letter in the post off my insurance company pretty much demanding a dyno readout of my bike. Which isnt restricted, but I have the washers anyway. So I thought I'd have a go at fitting them myself and went through the excellent manual on this site. But when it came to starting her up, she sounds like shes running on 2/3 cylinders, and revs to about 4k and theres also purplish/blue smoke coming out of the exhaust.
I took them out and put it back together and still no luck.
Have I pushed or stretched something?. I made sure all the jubilee clip screws do not touch the screws on the carbs & the throttle cable opens & closes freely. I did take off two of my ht leads because I was going to clean my plugs but I didnt have a long enough tool to reach them so put them back on.

Any Ideas? :smt017

Did you put the HT leads back on in the right order? Have you changed the jets?

if its running on 3 cylinders then you should be alright ;) Jets are inside the carbs so unless you took them apart dont worry about them.

If it was all alright before you changed it then its clearly something you have done. The hanging revs and smoke could be due to an air leak. Are the inlet rubbers tightened up properly? Clamps done up tight? Air box sitted correctly? All rubber bungs and pipes put back properly?

Long shot here but it might be worth draining the the carbs of fuel and starting again. No doubt to put in the plates the crabs will have been moved and possibly shifted some dirt. Try all the easy stuff first tho then think about draining them out.

Cleaned the plugs, they were very black, sounds like its running on all 4 now which is a good sign. I also put some sealent on the washers ( behind them and infront ) in case there was an air leak. I went over everything about 4 times this weekend and still no luck. It just wants to rev to about 8k off the start button. Throttle fully closes and I just cant find anything that could be leaking air :smt009 . I feel its time for an embarassing trip to the mechanic as I'm going camping to wales on it in 2 weeks!.

You have probably pulled one of the HT leads slightly out of the plug cap and that could be your running on 2/3 problem.
The washers will need to be siliconed onto the head to stop any airleaks as metal to metal doesn't really seal well.

Why does the insurance want a dyno print out?
As far as I was aware they never need to know if a bike is restricted or not as for theft issues its still the same bike whether its restricted or not.
