Managed to get round to stripping it at the weekend. Got a very comprehensive idea of how to go about doing the head gasket, tension blades and cam chain now.
Cooling system was fecked, it was full of powder and looked like someone had tried to stuff a car parks worth of grit inside. Head looked ok to me. The strange thing ive only just noticed tho is that the bit of casing underneath the cam chain. i saw millameter's thread and he doesnt have it, just the casing to hold in the front tension blade. Got 5 days off over xmas so gonna put that aside for the bike and blitz the ZXR. By the way, i used a pair of bolt croppers to get the cam chain off, but how the f*** do you get it on. Me and my bro buggered about for a good half hour and still couldnt do it. did it once tho and couldnt do it again.

Re: My spare engine stripped
ive just finished doing the rebuild on my bike, first run out today actually. before i did the rebuild i read loads of threads about different ways to replace the cam chain, i just managed to squeeze the old chain off but could for the life of me get the new one on so i just used a dremel and cut away a small part of the casing that goes beneath the chain and it makes it so much easy rather then damaging the new chain.

Im planning to do that myself with a dremmel. Usually you would split the cases!

Remove your pick-up , block off the oil ways and have a big can of parts cleaner to keep washing away the swarf.RedexRobB wrote:Im planning to do that myself with a dremmel. Usually you would split the cases!
Whatever you do don't fully remove that pain in the butt piece as it's a splash back for the cam chain to help keep it oiled.
As soon as I can gut the spare room I'm going to set up both engines and get them swapped over - that should be fun !!
Then I've got a three engine build for the ZRX after that
Nothing worse than having an H and not being able to scratch it !
