desk top for me, used to have laptop, but that was mainly a transportation thing as i was at uni/college and needed to haul it round, plus the saving in desk space. Now have an 'all in one' desktop with all the gubbins in the back of the screen and a wireless mouse and keyboard. Now considering a tower PC as im playing a few graphics orientated games now and this one cant keep up.

prefer a desktop myself with a tower, one you can modify over and over.

I have a Dell Inspirion laptop that I bought 'refurbished' from Ebay for around £200.. maybe 3 years ago now. 1.8gHz, 1GB RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

It does the job, but I'd like more RAM and storage.

For £3-400 you can get a laptop with 3+GB RAM and a 260+gb hd, so I don't think you can go far wrong!

I'm actually thinking about getting one... A desktop PC would be pretty much useless to me at home.

Get yourself a cheap ass laptop from ebay, a dell inspiron 1150, stick 2gb ram in it, 2ghz cpu and about 60-100gig hdd and wifi for general slobbing on the sofa,/hauling it around.

Get a decent desktop for gaming and stuff.

Thats my setup :D

That's exactly why I've always had laptops! :smt003

For gaming I've got the Xbox360, so have no interest in playing games on a PC.

Desktop.

Having been building my own computers since 1993'ish with the good old 3/486's and having lived through the custom cool case mods era of the late 90's when AMD introduced the Socket A/462 Athlon I now have a Dell of all things.

But in all fairness it's build quality is top notch, it's reliable and it does exactly what I use it for. The best thing is it's damn near Silent ;) I've had it a couple of years now and it's still faultless.

For the geeks out there the specs are as follows:

Q6700 Core 2 Quad
6GB DDR PC1066 Ram
2 x Nvidia GeForce 7900GTX SLI
3 x 500gb 32mb cache Sata II Western Digital Drives (Raid 0)
Pioneer BD-R.
2 x Dell Ultrasharp U2410 24" TFT

Laptop any day of the week.

Laptops are OK if you're on the move all the time or if you don't want to play games on it, are simple to move around and these days they are just as specced up as the tower-based PCs you get. The fact that I'm writing this from an iMac doesn't help but hey, Microsoft vs Apple is a completely different topic :smt003 .

Xbox 360 Elite for me, easier to use and better online than PCs, plus you don't have to install prety much every tiny little thing IMO.

My boyfriend has an alienware desktop machine that was top of the range in 2004, has recently had a full overhaul with quad core jobbies, etc, and new double graphics (he does a lot of thing like that.) Makes for an awesome gaming machine. Has 2 monitors set up on it. That's in the spare room, though it's technically Dan's office.

Laptop was a replacement for his alienware laptop that got kicked on the train. Alienware got bought out by Dell so he went with a kick ass novatech laptop (18 months ago) which stays in the lounge, also plugs into the TV so we watch BBC i-player through the tv, and also any downloaded movies.

And I won an asus eee pc from coca cola last year, little 7" linux thing, which is all fun and quite useful for my evening college works.

As far as the quest for pcs go: He was self employed for a while, and if he didn't spend the money on something cool for himself, ie laptop, pc, car, etc then the tax man would get it. Apparently buying shedloads of lego doesn't count as a self employed tax deductable purchase.

Also have a plethora of videogames, new and old but at the moment most evenings are spent playing Zelda:Spirit tracks on my DS on the couch.
I love my DS.

I got myself a new laptop on Sat as!

I got an HP from Currys (does that sound more like an unhealthy meal to anyone else??) for £399.

It's got 4GB RAM, 360GB HD, dual core processor and a Lightscribe drive (which I haven't even looked up to see what it means yet!).

A bit more than what I REALLY wanted to spend, but seems like a bit of a bargain without resorting to refurbished stock!

I also told them to fk right off with all the extras, because the first thing I was going to load onto it was Vuze. :smt003

I've always built PCs, but recently bought a macbook pro for work/travel needs.
It is insanely well made... but that's because it costs about £300 more than most laptops of the same spec!! But it's clear the money has gone into build quality. Never used anything as well made as this. And I've owned some high end Sony Vaios.

But anyway, I plug it into a 24" monitor when at my desk and I forget I'm working on a laptop. It's just crazy how powerful they are these days.

So I say get a laptop - small enough to carry and use on sofa/bed. And yet you can plug them into a monitor or TV if you're at a desk (with bluetooth keyboard/mouse if you really want to spoil yourself)
