car question - brake fluid on disks

the girlfriends car failed the MOT yesterday, one of the failures were the right rear caliper leaking fluid, i havent looked yet but the spanner monkey said wed need to replace the pads (obviously) and disk as fluid is all over them. Not so sure i need to replace the disk so what are your thoughts? I understand that a brake pad would need to be changed as its a material and to some extent would absorb the fluid/contaminate it, but cant see a metal disk being damaged or penetrated by brake fluid. Im assuming a clean with some brake cleaner will see it right, right?

brake cleaner mate, personally i use white spirits then set light to it but be warned this is highly inflammable method :-) i've had brake pads and discs soaked in brake fluid and cleaned em up my way with no probs at all.

he's talking cobblers mate, he's after money...

pads will be knacked, but disc will be fine unless warped, cracked or worn.

clean the disc with brake cleaner or jizer, dry it off, or if you are paranoid, clean disc with steel wool, hehe.
ameteurs practice and train unitl they can do it, professionals practice and train until they cannot fail at it..

Brake cleaner will be fine mate. When i worked in a garage i would of been told to snag discs aswell, just to cover your own butt, if anything happens, the tech gets the toad.

A good brake n parts cleaner will also wash out your pads - scour them up once finished to get them to bite the discs good ....

But car pads are cheap so a fresh set wont go wrong, see if you can get race versions as they generally have 30% more braking surface and do make a big difference - got a set in my big comfy couch and feels real good.

Thought as much. It also failed on a wiper blade which we knew was on its way out but since its been in the MOT place its started to fall apart, so a bit suspicious about that one. Also needs a new headlight as its not secure after i broke one of the mounts hitting the back end of a car just before christmas, oops. But to sort the lot £722!!!!! For sourcing and fitting a new caliper and disk, headlight and wiper blade shocking

175 was for a new headlight reflector backing, i can get a new one direct from volvo for 135, but getting one 2nd hand for 54. 120 saved!

Sourced a refurbed caliper for 60 quid on an exchange for old. They quoted us for two, but the MOT report says its was defective on one side, so go figure that one :smt017

Looks like ive also saved 50 quid on the disk. All in all we can get the car through for less than 200. :excited

BTW, quoting fro two callipers wasn't a nasty thing cause having a refurbishment one on one side will most likely give you unbalanced braking and it can fail on that too ! shocking

Always mind my 360's left rear hub bearing went and I asked for both to be done, they argued to do just the one as the other could go double the distance.

Accepting the challenge i lay downed the glove that if it did go within 3 months I would buy the bearing but they would have to do all the fitting free - they accepted.

8 days later the new bearing failed shocking - they checked and couldn't believe it, replaced FOC.

5 days later same bearing went again shocking shocking

Replaced FOC with them now asking the V to investigate , now knowing the tell tale signs I drove back in 2 day's later to say that one was on it's way out again and was convinced the other side was now going too !

They took the car back and replaced both hub's and bearings all for my original £85

Turns out the 1st bearing hub was distorted and causing the new ones to shatter , the load going onto the other then made it go , so they felt they needed to replace everything as they should have measured the hub in the first place.

Fantastic non dealer garage that specialised in them , couldn't of asked for better service but was a pain getting to them.

ovlov, funny cos thats what we call it sometimes!!! :lol:

only a 1993 440, 1.7 injection. Nice little car, never seen another one like it. Wed like to get the new C30, but money far too tight.

440's have some wee faults with them - rear trailing link rings a bell but generally good work horses

Can't go wrong with a 360GLT if you love rear wheel drive :smt003 They have clutch issues but once sorted good for another 100K , will mince BMer's of the same class and i even had a Merc SL owner looking at his motor and wondering why? :smt005 Straight line hero , I over took him at 120+ on a 90' sweeper :smt003

C's as well as the V's are heavy and you feel it ! The motors need to be worked hard to perform. My project before leaving was fitting a V6 760 engine into the 360 as the splines matched up and the engine bay had plenty room for it , chipped it would kick out well over 300 BHP in a car under half the weight :smt003 Upgrading the brakes was the next concern though :smt005

Anyhoo , my 3 series motors served me well and I really did knock their pan in :smt004 - you can get a oil fired boiler on a pallet into them hatchbacks :smt004

Ovlov was a biker carton that appeared in Bike magazine. It replaced Ogri for a while.........................it was a planet I think with lots of non bike friendly car drivers

That is a fucking joke!!!!!
£200 sounds alot more like it, what garage did you take it to, Harrods??!!!! Think they were dreaming with that quote, doubt it would even cost that much at a main dealer!!

Put a 440/480 turbo lump in it, go like f***!!!! Pretty similar to the Renault 21 Turbo engine IIRC and there fucking rapid.
Pretty sure the 1.7 is based on a Renault engine (was around that time that Volvo and Renault were sharing engines).
