Post by Fastforward »

Hi all, i got a big problem.. In the process of fixing my bike up myself. The problem is my crankshaft sprocket has a broken tooth. Its a zxr400h1. Any ideas on what my options are? I dont think the sprocket is removable

I take it u mean the chain sprocket? It is replaceable, if u take the sprocket cover off, you'll see the sprocket with two bolts near the middle. Undo those and a flange should come off with them, it will need to be turned slightly to slide it off the output shaft splines. Your sprocket should slide straight off to be replaced by another.

Just note it is best to replace the lot as a set, ie new chain and sprockets all round

Ahh! Umm, pass. Although something is telling me there's a hex bolt in the middle?

Ok im considering another crankshaft, and i need my bike running asap. The next problem is that i can get 1 for a J or a L, otherwise a new 1 which would burn a hole through my leg! I know the J is very similar to the H, so is the crankshaft interchangable, considering a good balancing if needed? My pistons are standard and im not sure about my rods but they should be.

if it is only one broken tooth on the cam chain sprocket on the crankshaft I'd take a calculated chance and ignore it...........................I genuinely think it would be OK.

And certainly worth the gamble.......................versus the cost of replacing the crank and all that entails

It might be a good idea to find the missing tooth and also how did it break

I bought the bike with problems, it hardly started and was rough as hell. I managed to get the bike starting first time every time and running good, as best as i could do without spending much. The revs hanged at 2000 no matter how i tweaked the mixture and there was a constant tapping noise. I was saving up to send it in when it seized on me. It was the camchain. Pistons and valves have carbon buildup but im cleaning that, otherwise they are good. Im getting another inlet camshaft for cheap, mine is well below service level and 2 cams are bumpy. Getting new rings, stem seals, gaskets etc.. I regret it but ill fix it, its just that sprocket that was bothering me. The tooth could have been broken before i bought it, ill still make sure though.
