Lights problem??

Post by U_h0rnet5 »

Hey everyone,

I'm not sure if that the bulbs are gone or its something faulty with my headlights. The problem is that when the light switch is on only the little light is working at the bottom and when I go to put the full beams on they do not come on either (neither does the headlight on the dash). However here is the weird part when I flick the pass button the full beams come on!

What do you think the problem is, would it be the bulbs are gone and I need some new ones?

Whip them out and have a look. Ive got a jap import where the lights only come on with the ignition, but dont recall being able to use the pass lights.

Wouldn't have thought the bulbs would have gone, and not both at the same time either. If they've gone they won't work at all, they won't start working by using a different switch. Which kinda points towards the problem - the headlight switch. I'd be looking at that for some shitted up contacts. Maybe spray some contact cleaner in it.

theres two fillaments on the headlight, one for diped and one for high beam. Hence, the dipped lights could have blown and your high beam still work.

That is what I thought but wouldn't the beams work if they were switched on to full. They only seem to work on the pass switch.

ooooh, just thought - I believe the pass switch activates BOTH filaments, whilst the hi/lo switch flips from one t'other. How do I know? my 35/60w bulbs used to be so crap I used to often ride with the pass switch held down to get some extra light.

hope that give's you a clue to the problem, failing that have a good look at the colour wiring diagrams.
I do 700 miles a week in all weathers including snow, that's roughly 35,000 miles a year, and some weekend warrior biker has the nerve to get out of his Audi at work to tell me to I was riding far too fast in the wet (over taking at 50... fast eh?).

Its all fine now lol the headlight fuse had blown so just changed it over and badaboom it works :excited .

Also I have only just notice the difference with the wiring loom on my L4 to my L5 the L5 has so many fuses in the fuse box!

I'd still be wanting to have a good check round. Whilst fuses can blow through getting old it's more likely it has blown for a reason. Would be worth checking you haven't got a chafed wire in the lighting circuit and check out that headlight switch. If it blows again on you at night it will be a PITA. If everything checks out fine it's one of those things, but worth having a root around at your own leisure.
