Oil Leak

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

Oil Leak

Post by Alan P »

Hi guys, I've posted this in the Engine section, but thought I'd ask here as well.

Does anyone know if there is any difference between the spark plug inserts on the H and L models, or perhaps between any of the L models? The item I'm referring to is the tube that sits under the cam cover into the cylinder head and through which the spark plugs are located.

The reason I ask is that my spare engine was rebuilt recently and the head was replaced (from what I don't know). It was rebuilt and runs ok, but has an oil leak through these inserts, whereby oil runs out through the drain holes at the front of the head. Having taken the inserts out last night they are a very loose fit and it's easy to see why they leak.

The part number differs between the H and L models (32150 and 32102 respectively), but I don't know if they actually differ in diameter or size in any other way. The part numbers for the oil seals around the base and the top (to the cam cover) are the same. Can anybody advise?

Cheers

That particular leak is quite common and is caused by the rubber 'o'rings at the top and bottom getting old and hard. New set of those top and bottom will sort it id say.

Thanks for the reply, but the seals are ok.....it's the inserts that are very loose. I'm thinking that either they varied them between models or somebody has machined out the head slightly, but then why do that?

I had the same problem when I built my engine last year, tried couple of different ones and they all leaked oil, what I do now is silicone (rtv) around the o-ring and had no problems since. I will do this every time I build a motor from now on.

cheers gaz
