hi guys, looking for some advice. ive been offered some fcr flatsides. i,m running standard carbs with ram air at mo. question is is it worth changing and setting up. what gains should i expect. any advice appreciated.

I'm in the middle of setting up some flatsides........................they are NOT just a bolt on.

I've had a number of issues.

My ram air box needed to be modified to get the carbs on to the rubbers

I had to cut and weld the cable bracket

You need carb rubbers that extend far enough into the ram air box to get the carbs on. I made a plate that bolts on with the rubbers to exttend them out a little
Also I removed all the little protrusions from the rubbers...........makes getting the box on and of easier

It's better if you have the flat side carb rubbers.................rare and hard to find

Change the screws on the clips to allen cap heads and use a ball end allen key to tighten and loosen...........much much easier

Move the accelarator pump actuating arm to the outer hole

replace the o ring in the float valve seat.................very important

Block the air corrector jet

block off the two oulets to the soloind valve thingy

4th groove on inner carbs and 3rd groove on outers............standard needles

3 turns out on the pilot screw

and then all you need is the right mains................something like a 120 or 122 is what I will end up with




Actually setting them up is easy enough.............go to a dyno

I'm sure theres more ut that'll keep you busy


As for improvment......................so far I've got about 2 ponies at the top end...........but theres more to come...............there is something of a flat spot about 6K I doubt very much if I'll be able to get rid of it completely but from 7K it flies and pulls much better than CVs..............carefull throttle hand control is needed better to wind it on rather than whack it open

cheers cargo. thats the answer i was looking for. a bit tricky, as you say not just a bolt on. a very informitive description. i,m sure a few of us will benefit from. thanks bobby
