Getting cam chain off crank sprocket?!

Hi,

ive currently got the cylinder head off doing some work on cams etc.. so while im at it going to change the cam chain, but i cant seem to remove it from the crank sprocket because of the profile in the engine casing (not a very good description but if youve done this job before you'll know what i mean)

Any tips on getting the chain off from the crank sporcket then? (i would just break it but then ive gotta get the new one back on )

this is one of the reasons i'm a great believer in removing the engine to split it then you can remove the cam chain, a lot of people think you can do it with the engine in situ, but as you say from the casting it doesn't seem possible, a new genuine chain from Kwak is a complete chain not a split one otherwise it would make sense to cut the chain.good luck!

I've just split an engine yesterday and the cam chain would not come of the crank sprocket until I had split the cases.

It's only a very small amount of material that needs to be removed to get the chain off with the cases intact. I'm sure I've read somewhere on the forum about someone having removed the offending bit of casing to get the chain on and off ?

I have ground material away on my race engines and never had any problems. Just enough to allow chain removal.

i dont know what i was doing the other day when i couldnt get it off, went out this morning a got if off in about 10 seconds must have still been drunk with christmas cheer

engine still in frame, just got the head off, came off fine then got the new one in fine too. Just gotta be fiddly with it.

This is what i had to do with my L5 when replacing the cam chain, however i think some models of engine do not have this offending item, i will go check as i have a L1 engine and i think an L2/L3 engine in my garage to check this.

However if you do grind it, make sure you get all the metal shavings!!!!! The hoover is dead handy for this.

i replaced my chain and never removed any metal! maybe mine has been done already?
