Engine Protection
I had an off yesterday and despite sliders/ crash bungs etc still managed to rub through the altenator cover. Has anyone already sorted the issue of engine protection (in particular the alternator cover)
I dont want to go through this again so I either
1) Dont crash (good in theory)
2) Improve the protection (bigger sliders, protctive overlays for the casing etc)
3) Or - failing all else - hold a large supply of spare covers (not ideal)
Any experience with protection that works - and has been demonstrated to work?

Re: Engine Protection
I'm sure you can buy extra heavy duty covers.
But I'd go for the don't crash option but then with the kind of racing I do a cracked or worn through engine casing is the very least of my worries if and when I do crash.
If you buy a couple of covers and get them repaired after every crash you'd be ok.
Suppose your next question is................. does anyone know a good ally welder

Re: Engine Protection
Hi cargo - thanks fopr that. I am still in the novice, track days, short track, dont hit anything solid, nice run off areas- category. Coming from Carickfergus I assume you are a road race nutter - respect.
Any idea who supplies the heavy duty covers - I havent seen any advertised anywhere

Re: Engine Protection
Ive been looking for them too mate...havent found anything yet that does'nt cost a fortune.
Ive been lucky to only slide my bike on the right hand side so far, but its only a matter of time!
ive been thinkin of trying to mould some carbon kevlar sheeting around a spare case i have, and give that a go.....just aint got around to it yet

Re: Engine Protection
one of my bikes has a reinforced cover on it, looks like 4-5mm ally plate shaped and welded on ..
do the race fairing not cover the genny cover ? the lower's i got off jake do, if so do you reckon bonding a bit of carbon/kevlar/ally over the inside of this part of the fairing would do the trick ?

Re: Engine Protection
some fairings do, some dont. Both my sets dont
but thats a good idea tho with the kevlar sheeting on the fairing. id probs just stick a section on the outside of the fairing, might even save the fairing itself.

Re: Engine Protection
Great idea on the kevlar - thanks for that. Will let you know how I get on. I seems that BEET did (or do) a beefed up cover.

Re: Engine Protection
Standard ones go through very easily. I've also gone through one with a proper kevlar race protector on it. The only decent way to avaoid going through is iether thick aftermarket covers (very expensive) or get a thick (3-5mm) plate welded on that I think cost me £20. And it lasted many many crashes

Re: Engine Protection
I will try the plate option as well and see how that goes. There are race kevlar "overlays" which are mucho expense and dont look to me as though they can be properly bonded to the alloy cover.
