Any one have any idea why it might have died coz i thought once you were running you were OK :smt017 ,
Does the zxr400 L 92 model charge itself?
Or has the battery just had it ...
is this a common problem ??

it will charge itself when running yea

but as mentioned above, u need to check if the engine turns, if not then power isnt getting to the starter motor.

if it turns but doesnt fire then i would take a look at the plugs to check they are firing

i take it the fuel is getting thru?

I think its definately the battery i charged it when i got home and it fired up no problems went about a mile round my area and guess what... it dies again :smt013
Think the battery is just knackered .. the juice is draining from it straight away.
Could it be anything else? fuel and plugs are ok as far as i know

could it be that the bike doesn't charge the battery anymore, and now your battery is died caus it was completely depleted??

Dont even start thinking about any other problems until you've tried a new battery, old dead batteries can be charged and work for a little while because they wont retain a charge for very long once the bike is running even if the bike is still trying to charge the battery.

just deal with it in steps, if the new battery doesnt sort it out then start looking at the bike. battery isnt expensive either.

The trouble with having an open mind, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

i thought that once the engine is running u can take a battery off?

cuz its just running off the alternator - thats what i learnt with a car but maybe a bike cant do this? interesting :smt017

I have a brand new shiny battery that i am very willing to sell to you should you decide to try that!? it was put in my bike and two days later taken out!

Try getting your hands on a multimeter see if the battery is actually dead.

Bought a new battery today £25.. Started bike up no problems rode a few miles around the estate and guess what... the feker dies again :smt010 , Asked a mechanic at woosters in Leeds it turns out that whats happened is the wires have corroded that go into the relay box thingy, I had the same problem with my headlights the other week which was a corroded wire. and once they warm up it cuts out ..why i dont know as im no sparky. But should be getting it sorted tomorrow and will let you know how it goes.

just wish my step bro checked the other wires :smt018

The main constant live feed wire, which is white, joins and breaks off at 3 points, the point where this is located can often collect water into the loom, the wires then start to corrode and heat up creating more resistance and thus needing more voltage to push the current round.

This is what happend on my old 96 zxr (i would go down the road and it would cut out), i had to take the entire loom out and re-solder the joins, it probably would of been better though if i had whacked a new loom on it or replaced the main live feed wires.

Same problem

Post by Hellzone »

I had exactly the same problem recently, sometimes the bike would last for days and then suddenly i'll be riding along and it would just cut out and the battery completely or almost depleted... discovered it to be one of the phases coming from the alternator (after changing the battery of course) so i'm now waiting on a set of windings, should be here tommrow :) i'll let you know how it goes incase this is the same issue your having (maybe an idea to get that multimeter out).
