L2 resto - first time for everything

Hi All, Thought Id put up a build thread of my L2 as I have done for the majority of project cars I have had. I haven't long passed my test and have bought a nice L2 from an owner on the forum. Before insuring the bike I am going to strip, clean and refurbish the bike over winter as I feel it will be a great way for me to learn more about the bike, and it to will allow me to have the bike spic and span for spring/summer. It will be a massive learning curve for me working on this however I am a mountain bike mechanic and have a reasonable knowledge about car mechanics so think It'll be fine.

Plans are to strip to the frame, repaint and rebuild seeing to every bit of 'rust', paint flake and 'odd' bolt. And of course a few personal touches.

Bit more work done today. it amazing how much muck and grime there can be once you start removing bits when something appears so clean on the outside. Just had a quote for my powder coating at a bargain price so hopefully progress will be quicker than planned.

Am going to need opinions on colours as i'm undecided. Thinking of satin black frame and brackets with kwak green fairings and black decals. With the subtle gold highlight to F and R calipers, forks, rear master cyclinder and sprocket bolts.....

managed to get the swingarm off today however I now need to tackle the knackered bearings inside the swingarm.

Painted the shock though as it was a bit more relaxing.

I then soaked the parts in white vinegar to chemically strip the rust and ease the grease. Heres the after results which Im very pleased with



Painted, built and copper greased.... Spring is going off to be powdercoated with the other bits

full rear brake setup done now, got new pins for £3.25 for the pair including individual clips and a single piece clip which i decided to use as it holds them in the correct position and is less fiddly.

few more bits done, Front brake setup finished as well as hand polishing the rearsets . Swingarm bearings have now been removed so frame will hopefully be going for powdercoating next week sometime.

Hi..

Lovin the calipers!

What paint did you use? I'm about to overhaul my calipers and i'm unsure of what paint to use!

Are those the original caliper half bolts just polished up a tad?

Hi, yeah the bolts are the originals just polished up with wire wool, I used some high temp engine paint off ebay for the calipers however the finish is almost like a satin gold. I got asked if they were anodised by a friend at first glance. I can patch the link through if you want?

Im after the same look however my caliper bolts are in pretty bad shape, will try cleaning them up first, But i had to by a new one today as it was stripped taking it out someone has used the wrong size screw to hold the plate on and it looks like it has crushed the bolt hole! rather strange!

Yeah Im trying not to rush as i have all winter. What's your timescale?

well im doing an diploma in plastering at the min that finishes in feb i do 2 and a half days a week then the rest of the time is on the bike so looking about 2 months hopefully i bought frame and arm already painted so just a matter of swapping and cleaning as i go
